The plan to reincarnate “My Name Is Earl” has been terminated after TBS has canceled its plan to pick up the series left by NBC. “TBS was in the very early stages of discussions with Fox about ‘My Name is Earl,’ and we are disappointed that we were not able to reach an agreement,” the cable channel said in a statement.

Creators were in “preliminary conversations” earlier this week to have the comedy series airing on TBS after they failed to pitch it to other networks such as FOX and ABC. Re-run episodes have been streaming on TBS but the numbers could not meet the financial demand to produce new episodes.

“My Name Is Earl” which is a single camera comedy starring Jason Lee as Earl J. Hickey, thus officially ends on season 4. One possible reason for not ordering fifth season is because the license fees are about to be increased, meaning costs like cast salaries are going up.

“While we had hoped to find a way to produce additional episodes for TBS, in the final analysis we simply could not make the economics work without seriously undermining the artistic integrity of the series,” 20th Century Fox Television which is producing the series said. “As none of us, Greg (Garcia) included, want the show to go out on anything but a high note, we regret that we must put to rest any speculation that ‘Earl’ will continue.”

However, TBS and Fox have reached a separate deal to have the past episodes repeated for upcoming Fall season. On the last note, Fox said it was “grateful to everyone at TBS for their enthusiasm for the series.”

My Name Is Earl is in early negotiations to be picked up by basic cable network TBS, weeks after broadcast network NBC cancelled the Emmy-winning series after four seasons, according to The Hollywood Reporter. TBS already has a deal in place to air syndicated reruns of Earl starting this fall, but it is still uncertain if a deal for 13 new episodes will pan out, in part because it’s unclear whether the show’s stars would return under what would most likely have to be a far-tighter budget.

NBC have just cancelled My Name Is Earl

According to industry scuttlebutt, My Name Is Earl is on the ropes and at risk of being canceled by NBC. Nikki Finke is reporting that it’s practically a done deal at NBC, but Earl could be moving to Fox.

It’s not just the lousy Nielsen ratings that have done the shaggy-dog sitcom in, it’s also the rising production costs. NBC has an entire line-up that’s bleeding in the ratings, so surgery is required. It is very likely that Earl will get the ax.

But that may not be the end of Earl Hickey. Like Scrubs before it, My Name Is Earl may find a more friendly home on another network. Fox reportedly is inclined to pick up My Name Is Earl. The Fox roster is devoid of sitcom successes, unless they’re animated. Brad Garrett’s ‘Til Death may still technically be coming back in the fall, but nobody would call it a hit show. The last legitimate sitcom of quality on Fox was Arrested Development.

Well, former NBC Entertainment president Kevin Reilly is now running Fox and he’s interested in bringing Earl to his net. His interest isn’t purely altruistic or even nostalgic.

20th Century Fox Television produces the show and without enough episodes broadcast, the value of the program in syndication is zilch. Also, Reilly would probably like to see Earl succeed on Fox so he could stick it to NBC. I would.

I’m confirmed that NBC is considering cancelling My Name Is Earl due to low ratings and escalating costs. The 20th Century TV show’s producers are resisting the drastically reduced licensing fee they’re being offered. So word is that Kevin Reilly could pick up the show, which he originally developed when he was NBC Entertainment prez, for the Fox network, where he is now. Fox’s own comedy development is weak, with Boldly Going Nowhere dead and projects like the derivative Cop House a better fit for Comedy Central. But 20th TV needs a few more years of Earl for syndication value. As for NBC, everything is low-rated, even its critical hits like 30 Rock. But I bet if NBC owned the show, it would stay on the air. So maybe the network execs will reconsider if they realize the show may head to a competitor.
